Convergence

Convergence is back as Microsoft Business Applications Summit

There was a blog article published yesterday by James Phillips, Corporate Vice President that we should be really excited about: Microsoft Convergence is back! The new show will be called Microsoft Business Applications Summit and will be held late July this year in Seattle.

Microsoft Business Applications Summit

Many of us – MVPs, partners and customers – have raised our concerns and the need for a dedicated event, where we could talk to each other, share our customer success stories and ISV solutions, and get dedicated access to various Microsoft teams involving our business. That was hard to get on events which are calling for a much broader audience with a mix of other products, where you would not necessarily bump into the right person to reach out for in case: you had a brilliant product idea to share; a huge functionality gap to address; or simply tell where the system could perform better.

Now our prayers have reached open ears and we have Microsoft Business Applications Summit. The format will most likely change a little bit from what we got used to, since a couple of additional products and technologies came onboard since the release of AX 2012. We have PowerBI, LogicApps, PowerApps, Azure and a lot more in the Microsoft stack of technologies surrounding our beloved ERP systems.

I am sure we will have the same depth of functional and technical sessions, partner/customer/recruiter Expo area, discount book store and all the nice additions available this year that none of you should miss. Especially with the new business goals Microsoft have set, about being on the latest version of the product for everyone very soon, Overlaying- and customization-free by only using Extensions.

Convergence 2015 EMEA additional AX 7 details, Visionary award

First of all I would like to congratulate Mushtaque Ahmed, COO @ JJ Food Service for winning the Microsoft Visionary Award at Convergence 2015 in the Big Data & Insights category. I am very excited to be part of the team, which could deliver such innovative solutions under his strong leadership.

Also I would like to share some other interesting details on the upcoming Microsoft Dynamics AX 7 product:

  • There is a Windows 10 app, which can provide the AX 7 client experience natively, without using a Web browser
  • Task recorder is enhanced with a Task guide tool, which can be used to drive through employees in the application step-by-step, ie. on how to create a new Sales order
  • Testing framework integration in Visual Studio for recorded tasks gives the ability for developers to test how newly deployed changes affect the existing application in a simple way
  • Speech-driven AX 7 application experience with Cortana gives the ability of hands-free operation of the system
  • Native Environment health monitoring and user behavior tracking capabilities to spot any potential problems with AX in time
  • Vendor/partner-assisted demo for ISV solutions and apps in the Azure marketplace can bring value for customers

Doesn’t it sound exciting?!

Convergence 2015 EMEA quick overview

The first two days of Microsoft Convergence 2015 EMEA has passed in Barcelona and the many sessions with a technological angle has revealed a lot of interesting topics. I would like to give a quick summary highlight on what can we expect around the Microsoft Dynamics AX space and its technology stack.

  • Responsive layout AX 7 user interface served via a web service, without the requirement of a client installation
  • Keyboard shortcuts are still available, with slight changes to exclude common overlapping key combinations within web browers
  • PowerApps is a new platform which can communicate with a range of applications to quickly and interactively deliver mobile-based apps, including AX
    https://powerapps.microsoft.com
  • Power BI is supported natively within the AX 7 dashboards as tiles
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/axsa/archive/2015/02/18/power-bi-and-dynamics-ax-part-1-introduction.aspx
  • Application Integration Framework, Data Import Export framework and Office product integrations have all been consolidated to use a Data entity approach using OData as communication protocol
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh237663.aspx
  • Excel static data export is now available on all AX7 forms with a datasource, and interactive two-fold communication has been extended
  • SharePoint document store is now seamlessly integrated with AX 7 to replace/extend the Document attachments functionality
  • Developer workspace is now an integral part of Microsoft Visual Studio, with keeping the object-based, typed MorphX style development along with the X++ language. There are slight alterations, ie. Jobs are now called differently and are executing server-side due to a lack of a true client

There is no official release date announced yet, Dan Brown (AX R&D General Manager) only has confirmed Q1 2016 for the publicly available version.

As the day progresses at Convergence 2015 EMEA, potentially more news and insight will be revealed.

Join us at Microsoft Convergence EMEA 2015 in Barcelona

We are just 3 days away from the Microsoft Convergence EMEA 2015 event held at Barcelona. It is going to be an exciting event, focusing around the soon-to-be-released Microsoft Dynamics AX 7.0 (Rainier) version.

Earlier this year during the Convergence held in Atlanta JJ Food Service Limited had the privilege of showcasing many innovative ways of using AX and how building the infrastructure around an ERP system driven by the IT team could be the motor of a successful business, such as:

  • Modern eCommerce portal using AIF integration for selling goods with just-in-time information from AX (now redesigned based on Google polymer)
  • Machine learning and Predictive analysis to know what the customer is going to buy based on past purchase history and suggesting offers, frequently bought together items based on the contents of their current basket
  • Windows phone-based drivers’ delivery app through Azure cloud mobile services integration
  • Internet of Things (IoT) – connecting the delivery van’s thermal sensors in the chiller and freezer via the mobile app to collect and monitor temperature data and show it in a central place with PowerBI

Our team is aiming for being the best customer-side AX implementation in the world, which has also been recognized and appreciated by Microsoft in Atlanta, allowing us to be the highlight customer on their expo stand. The video of our customer story has been aired during the Dynamics AX Roadmap discussion and I would recommend to take a look, if you did not have a chance yet:

You may meet us in person to have a chat at the two sessions where JJ Food Service will be presenting our vision and ideas next week, or at the UK country reception evening:

1st of December, Tuesday 12:30-13:00: CS15ET02 – Revolutionizing customer service: The JJ Food Service way
2nd of December, Wednesday 11:30-12:30: BK15ED03 – Distribution and consumer goods: How to stay ahead of the competition with connected and customer-centric solutions

See you in Barcelona at Microsoft Convergence EMEA 2015!
